The first report of Cherokees visiting Spanish Texas came in 1807. In March of that year, a party of hunters traveled down the Red River to Natchitoches, Louisiana, where the United States had recently built a trading factory. According to Dr. John Sibley, the Indian agent, these Cherokees, the first of their people ever to visit his post, brought deerskins to trade. 26 Their presence so far south of the Arkansas settlements indicates that an expanding Cherokee population there may have been forcing Cherokees to seek trade elsewhere.
