“This publication is set the main dramatic faith tale of the early twenty first century, but one who most folk within the West have little concept is even occurring: the worldwide battle on Christians,” writes John Allen. “We’re now not conversing a couple of metaphorical ‘war on faith’ in Europe and the us, fought on symbolic terrain reminiscent of no matter if it’s ok to erect a nativity set at the courthouse steps, yet a emerging tide of felony oppression, social harassment and direct actual violence, with Christians as its top sufferers. besides the fact that counter-intuitive it will probably look in gentle of renowned stereotypes of Christianity as a strong and infrequently oppressive social strength, Christians this day surely shape the main persecuted spiritual physique on this planet, and too frequently its new martyrs endure in silence.”

Just as one didn’t need to be Jewish to be concerned with the fate of dissident Soviet Jews in the 1960s and 1970s, and one didn’t need to be black to feel outrage over South African apartheid in the 1980s, one doesn’t have to be a Christian today to be appalled by the widespread torture and murder of Christians. Yet for Christians, there’s a special obligation. In theological parlance, one might say that Christians have a “vocation” to come to the aid of their suffering sisters and brothers. Though the various denominations understand baptism somewhat differently, all share a conviction that through baptism we’re incorporated into the Body of Christ, so that the suffering of any part of that body, anywhere, is our pain too.
The martyrs, in other words, offer us the two most precious commodities in the spiritual life: hope and perspective. In the end, I can do no better to drive home the case than to quote Francesa Paci from her book Dove muoiono i Cristiani (Where Christians are dying). Her reference to the Vatican reflects its centrality in Italian psychology, but otherwise her points are universally applicable. Christians are dying in Orissa, in Iraq, in the Brazilian Amazon, but above all they’re dying in the indifference of so many who, not wanting to seem clericalist, simply minimize what’s happening.
He meant that Christians haven’t told the stories of their new martyrs in a compelling way, in the same fashion that Jewish authors have described the horrors of the Shoah. This book is my own small contribution to a budding Christian genre dedicated to telling these stories, and I want to thank Cardinal Dolan for that nudge. I’d like to take this chance to express gratitude to the team at Image, including Gary Jansen, Johanna Inwood, Carrie Freimuth, and their colleagues. As I’ve had the opportunity to say to them personally, they are “the best, the very best,” and this book would not exist without their support.
