The relative sizes of the driving and sideways forces depends on the angle of the sails to the boat’s centerline, which varies with the angle to the wind at which the boat is sailing. When sailing on a close-hauled course, the sails are pulled in tight, close to the centerline, and the sideways force is greater than the driving force. When the boat turns onto a reach, the sails are let out about halfway and the driving force increases, while the sideways force reduces. Turn further away from the wind, onto a run, when the sails are let out fully, and the driving force acts almost directly forward and the sideways force is zero.
Checking buoyancy bags Check buoyancy bags to be sure that there are no leaks and that the fastenings are firm; there should be at least three straps on each bag. When the boat is capsized or full of water, the fastenings take an enormous load. It is vital that they do not break, as the boat could then sink or be impossible to right. TOO LITTLE CORRECT TOO MUCH With too little buoyancy, the boat floats low in the water. It is difficult to right when capsized because of the weight of water and comes up with a lot of water on board (above).
It is 5–10° off a true run but is safer when you are learning to sail as it avoids the risk of an accidental jibe. The sails are eased right out and the centerboard is only slightly down. BROAD REACH On a broad reach, the wind comes over the port or starboard quarter of the boat. The sails are well out and the centerboard is a quarter down. 41 42 FIRST PRINCIPLES ROPES AND KNOTS Used to secure the boat, and to hoist, trim, and adjust the sails, ropes are an essential feature of all sailing boats.
