Aluminum Oxide Aluminum oxide particles are more dense than garnet and have a chunky wedge shape. This sandpaper is tougher and harder than garnet and is the most widely used abrasive in woodworking. Its durability and shape make it well suited to smoothing very hard woods like oak and maple, as well as many exotic woods. Silicon carbide particles are needle-shaped with sharp, pointy edges.

Tools for Surface Preparation 27 S E C T I O N 2 OV E R V I E W The grit on belts and drum sleeves is typically aluminum oxide, ceramic, or a blend of both. The backing is usually cloth, although paper is used for some wide belts. Drum sleeves tend to have thicker, more rigid backings. Foam pads and blocks are used primarily for contour sanding. Some can be used either wet or dry; some are used only wet. These washable pads are made by gluing silicon carbide or aluminum oxide to open- or closed-cell foam.

A B C 52 Finishing Tools NMP is gentler on bristles than methylene chloride-based stripper. Leave the brush in the stripper for about four hours and then work the stripper into the bristles with gloved hands (A). Hold the brush over the edge of a bench and use a stiff wire brush to clean out the softened finish. Bear down hard on the bristles, particularly near the ferrule (B). Clean away the stripper/finish residue by washing it well in warm water and grease-cutting dishwashing detergent (C). Use a brush comb to straighten out the bristles and remove any last hunks of finish.
