What they want, along with some of the tools and perspectives borrowed from sociology itself, is their own ‘standpoint epistemology’, something that cultural studies, in all its sophistication, can no longer contemplate without qualms. Queer theory is a more promising candidate for convergence because its authors tend to reproduce all the extravagant terminology of postmodern conjuncturalism, in return for which cultural studies can share the disruptive aura of all-purpose outing and antinormalization.
