Sometimes another type of probe can also be used: silence. Silence is uncomfortable and eventually (it may be a few seconds, but can feel much longer) the interviewee adds more detail. This would be relatively rude in a normal conversation, but once again, a depth interview is not a normal conversation. Generally speaking, if there is a lull in the response it may be a good time to probe.
