Once a plan is selected, its execution will follow exactly (see Fig. 17): as there is no uncertainty in this scenario.

2 Precedence relations between tasks The estimated task duration is represented by a distribution. It is convenient and quite common to use a three-point estimate: 1. Optimistic duration—this is the estimated duration of the task (in a given mode) in the case that the task is performed in the shortest possible time. 2. Most likely duration—this estimate represents the duration of the task (in a given mode) that will be observed most frequently if the task is performed repetitively. 3. Pessimistic duration—this is the estimated duration of the task (in a given mode) in the case that the task is performed in the longest possible time.

Task splitting—In some scenarios, it is possible to split the execution of a task by setting a split/break point and a restart point. Splitting a task involves stopping a task on a certain time period before it is completed, and beginning it again on a later time period. Splitting a task is performed by setting two parameters: • Split At—this is the time period to split the task, in other words to stop it in order to restart it on a later time period. • Restart At—the time period of task restart.
