Note that the variable name at the top of the column heading has remained unchanged. However, the statistic name that is shown in the second line of the heading now says N. And the value shown in the table cell has changed from the sum to the number of observations. This table is the first piece of the larger table that we are building in this chapter. The next piece of our table is the column showing the mean income. To change the statistic to build this column, all you have to do is pick a new keyword from the list and modify the TABLE statement.

PROC TABULATE DATA=TEMP; VAR INCOME; CLASS EDUC; TABLE INCOME*N INCOME*MEAN, EDUC; RUN; In the above code, EDUC has been added as a second dimension to the table. 2, you can see that this didn’t do what we expected. Instead of adding education levels as rows in the new table, it changed the existing columns into rows, and added education as columns. This is because PROC TABULATE expects rows and columns to be listed in a particular order. If a TABLE statement has no commas, then it is assumed that the variables and statistics are to be created as columns.

This time, we are adding two more variables to the table: gender and employment status. We could build a one-dimensional table to show all of these relationships, but it would have so many columns that it wouldn’t fit on the page, which would be confusing to read and interpret. A two-dimensional table is much more appropriate to this task. Income Employed PT N MEAN Employed FT N MEAN ALL N MEAN
