If what we are trying to do is to explain the existence of political beliefs, then we must choose our words carefully or the language we use obscures two quite different explanations. 'Traditional beliefs resurfaced', 'pre-revolutionary beliefs still exist today' - are these statements saying that people today, finding themselves in a particular situation, independently produce ideas that resemble those of their counterparts of an earlier period or does their author mean that today's views owe their existence to an earlier set?

But to return to official culture. Hegedus, in describing the leadership's response to the growing white-collar intake into the party, gives us a nice example of leadership perceptions: It seemed to us at the beginning of the fifties that this unwelcome development in the party's composition was attributable to subjective errors on the part of the lower ranks of the party leaders ... there was a case in which we expelled the first secretary of a provincial party council from the party on a charge of excluding manual workers from the party.
