Run a test cut, then run the 22 pieces. Remove the waste material between the two shoulder cuts on each piece by making multiple passes, using the miter gauge. 4. Assemble the half-laps. Apply glue to the dadoes of each pair of D pieces and compress and fit the pieces together to create a cross. Make sure the flats of the sharply mitered ends are aligned. Clamp each of the 11 pairs and let the glue dry. 5. Cut the solid-wood pieces. Use the miter saw and a stop block to cut 12 B pieces at 46" from six of the 1 x 2s.

The goal of this step is to lay out the three plywood layers of the desktop: the top surface; the middle structural layer; and the bottom layer, which consists primarily of 2½"-wide buildup strips. The important part of the layout is deciding where the joints will go, considering aesthetics and the structural assembly, and making the best use of the plywood stock. It’s a good idea to map out everything on paper before laying out the material and making any cuts. Draw a dimensioned overhead view of the entire desk, similar to the plan drawing.
