Minutoaurea, I. rossii, I. tigridia (Figure 20), I. typhifolia, and I. ventricosa. The only species endemic to this region is Iris kobayashii; all other species are found in neighboring areas of Russia or North Korea. The most characteristic irises comprise one of two ecological groups. One group is found growing in cold dry areas. These species are extremely hardy and resistant to many ecological hardships. They include those species in the series Ruthenicae, Tenuifoliae, and Chinenses. The second smaller group is associated with water, either permanent swamps and rivers or more temporary streams and seasonally wet spots.

The China Iris Project began as an informal discussion among three iris growers about the rarity of Chinese irises in cultivation.
