Since then random dot stereograms have been available commercially, and although they only consist of a single poster, when viewed carefully, a 3D effect is seen. An HMD is nothing more than a stereoscope, but instead of photographs animated video images are used.

To do this, the renderer is given the position and intensity of a virtual light source, and using some simple laws of illumination, shades the object with acceptable colour intensities. Shading algorithms range from the very simple to the very complex: Gouraud shading is found in most VR systems and renders polygons with subtle changes of intensity and colour over a polygon. The resultant image produces a matte effect, but is acceptable for most applications. Where it is important to see reflections of the illuminating light source Phong shading is used.

And if this were not accurate enough, one could implement a strategy where collision detection was performed at a vertex and edge level. 14 shows the four ways a pair of triangles can collide.
