The notion of translation may be used to describe these moves (strictly speaking, it should be called 'limited translation" so as to maintain the distinction between this and the extended notion of translation in Model 4). The translations that permit statements a, b, and c to be related are far from obvious. Several means for creating these translations have been suggested, and all take the form of a sort of abstract calculation: for example, correspondence rules, coordinated definitions, dictionaries, or elaboration of an interpretative system.

The second is that of science as a competitive enterprise where the main concern is the organizational forms that science takes. The third is the sociocultural model and particularly the practices and tacit skills that it brings into play. The fourth model, that of extended translation, attempts to show how the robustness of scientific statements is produced and simultaneously how the statements' space of circulation is created. Each model is characterized by its answers to six questions that lay out the social and cognitive dimensions of scientific development.
