The absence of a word does not prove the absence of a concept, but the presence of a word does prove the presence of a concept. Furthermore, the presence of a word proves that in that society the concept in question is a salient one - sufficiently so as to merit lexicalization. Correspondingly, the absence of a word indicates that a given concept, if present at all - is not salient in that society. For example, the concept of 'privacy' is very salient in Anglo culture, so it is not an accident that English has developed a special word for it.

Even if it were true that Anglo males, trained to control and suppress their feelings, may only experience excitement, anxiety, anguish, fear, sadness, or grief for a matter of seconds rather than minutes or hours; this cannot be applied to all human beings. Ekman comments further: It may be that under exceptional circumstances a single emotion endures for more than seconds or minutes, but I think it more likely that close inspection would reveal that the same emotion is being repeatedly evoked.
