The large-scale biomass plant can only produce up to 50,000 bbl/day of oil. This is because of the difficulties in transporting and storing required biomass in a sustained manner. One method being explored is to use multiple-fuel system consisting of both biomass and coal, which can allow the large-scale processing with a lower demand on amount of biomass.

Solar and wind energy–driven power plants can also be of this scale. These types of plants either can be connected to larger grids or can have its own independent grid serving local region. A connection to some types of energy storage system is also important for the stability and sustainability of the operations.
