Yet understanding metaphors and how they work together to form blends is an important part of the digital literacy that we are seeking. By providing people with an understanding of how embodied cognition works, we gain insight into how we might design technologies that work better with people. Metaphor We begin with the concept of a domain. A domain is a coherent sphere of activity observed and described at some level of abstraction. This might be very abstract, such as talking about the domain of love, traveling, or of games.

This sentence uses the metaphor THEORY IS A BUILDING and also shows how, from a concrete domain (construction), we establish a projection to a more abstract domain (that of theories). At the same time, we can see how the meaning of the sentence derives from the original meanings associated with the domains of building and construction. The metaphor reelaborates the original meaning, thereby producing a new one that applies to the domain of theories. A significant and well-known metaphor is the conduit metaphor, first analyzed by Michael Reddy (1993).

We can refer to this metaphor in terms of names of domains, which gives the following structure: TARGET DOMAIN IS SOURCE DOMAIN. Importantly, the metaphor establishes a true equivalence relationship. Unlike analogy, which asserts that something is like another thing, metaphor says A IS B. This stronger relationship is where the felt sense of embodied cognition comes from. The device really is a stupid person. A commonly used example considers the relationship of love as a journey. ” In this example we have defined two different domains— the source domain (travels) and the target domain (love): LOVE IS A JOURNEY.
