It is followed by fragmentation and recentralization. 22 CULTURAL IDENTITY AND GLOBAL PROCESS This kind of cycle is specific to global systems based on the accumulation of capital - not as defined by Marxists, but closer to Weber's notion of abstract wealth, independent of particular forms of production and exploitation and, in fact, a unifier of them all. The particular form that such a cycle takes varies with the particular structures of accumulation and political as well as other exploitative structures.
