It has also been found possible to prepare particles up to 15 IJm diameter (9) in a single reaction. This is not possible using emulsion polymerization.
Furthermore, the kinetics of particle formation change dramatically (21) as the amount of carbon tetrachloride in the reaction medium is increased. The reaction kinetics will be discussed in more detail in Section 4. Here we draw the important conclusion that the solvency of the dispersion medium plays a crucial role in determining the particle size of the latex that is formed. The effect of the solvency of the dispersion medium on the final particle size in polar media has been published by Lok and Ober (6) and by Paine (18).
