Furthermore, there is also evidence from normal children suggesting considerable early cerebral specialization (see Hahn, 1987), which would seem to limit plasticity.

There is some evidence that children with reading difficulties in fact fail for a wide variety of cognitive reasons, and that there exist verbal and visual-spatial subtypes (see the Boder Test of Reading-Spelling Patterns) or surface and deep dyslexic subtypes (Temple, 1991a) similar to that occurring in adults. Classification has gone beyond the simple distinction as to whether reading ability is in line with general ability, and attempts have been made to distinguish children according to their psychometric profile or according to the strategy used in reading.

For children with neurological problems, a thorough assessment often includes some exploration of memory and attention. A lack of age-appropriate tests makes this difficult to do, especially with children under 12 years of age. Intact verbal memory skills are clearly very important to a developing child. This is recognized in the common inclusion of digit-span tasks in most IQ tests. However, other aspects of verbal memory also need to be considered. Clinical tests usually involve some form of story recall and word-list learning.
