If you handplane the edges of the top boards, plane them two at a time. Fold them together like a book when you clamp them in the vise. Complementary angles. Whether planed by hand or machine, the edges of mating boards will have complementary angles. ) If you use a jointer, be sure its fence is square to the infeed and outfeed tables. To avoid even minor inaccuracies, mark an “I” on the face of one board and an “O” on the face of the other. Be sure the “I” face is “in” toward the fence while jointing that board and the “O” face is “out” away from the fence when jointing that edge.
To make things easy, I chuck a bit in the router that is the same diameter as the width of the bedrail connecters; this allows me to cut the mortise in one pass. I use the connecter itself to set the router’s depth of cut. At the end, I square up the corners of the mortises with a chisel. Notice that the hooks on the male part of the connecter protrude through the back of the mounting plate. You’ll need to remove a little wood from the rails to accommodate the protrusion. Place the plate in the mortise, and whack the hooks with a hammer.
Make two plunge cuts to the full depth at each end of the mortise, then clear out the waste in between with multiple shallow passes. Square up the ends with a chisel. After one pass. When you’ve made the first cut for one set of mortises, reset the edge guide for a second cut to make the mortise its full width. Move the router from left to right to avoid making a climb cut. Lay out mortises. Use a pencil and a combination square to outline the four through-mortises in each side piece. Set up the router.
